The 28-135 is also 1/3 stop wider at 35mm than the 28-105, but by 105mm the difference is 2/3 stops the other way. Both of these lenses are a bit better at f/5.6-f8 than at maximum aperture. I would say copy-to-copy variation might be more of an overall factor for you, considering the age of your 28-105.
